"Some dates remain fixed in your mind. October 15, 2003, was a day I, Joy, will never forget"

11:00 a.m.: After a bad day at the doctor’s office, I was going through the McDonald’s drive-thru to pick up lunch before going to work. I got a phone call from my husband. He was telling me that our house was on fire. I told him I was in no mood for jokes. He told me it was not a joke.

As I was driving towards our house, I saw black smoke billowing up into the sky; as I neared the house I saw an array of emergency vehicles and first responders actively engaged in fighting the fire that was — most definitely — coming from our house.

We lost two beloved pet babies that day. Thankfully, our teenage son was at school and safe.

Although the house was not a complete loss (thanks to God first, and then the firefighters) due to smoke and water damage, we were left with just the clothes on our backs.

The insurance man came about two hours after we called to make a claim and gave us a check to get basic necessities, clothes, and lodging. I had no idea that buying basic necessities all at once would cost so much!

I began to think of other fire victims — and also victims of floods and other disasters — who have lost a little or much. What could be done to help? The answer: personal disaster relief (comfort) kits.

After the Disaster ATD Kits are made up of basic necessity items specific to men, women, and children and given to family member(s) on the scene of a fire or other disaster.
